“Tour Nature: Wild and untamed”

This article discusses and talks about the respective writer’s wondrous and outwardly experience whilst he explored nature and its idiosyncrasies.

Alright you’re already stressed about the upcoming exams. Most of you folks are rummaging through your $400 finance book that you’ve never opened. Some of you might be scrolling your phone’s pages hastily to contact your friend and rant about how much you loathe college. But to make matters worse, BAM, the college newspaper that no one practically reads, knocks on your front door. But hear me out on this one, because this article is good for your general well being.  

Are you willing to find a solution to the never-ending pressure and anxiety? A gateway to a much welcomed, temporary state of solitude and bliss. Well here I am the doctor, and I shall prescribe to my dear patients (you viewers) the antidote. Travelling. There is a famous quote, “travelling leaves you speechless and then turns you into a storyteller”. When you are greeted by the benevolent gaze of canoeing, or the daunting sport of abseiling, all of that exam tension will be lifted and occupied by excitement instead. So I’ll let you in on my little clandestine adventure and how I got rid of my shaky nerves.

  • What activities can you participate in

First things first, my rendezvous was to a little town in Spain, that appears as a small dot on the global map. As proven by science, exercise is a key tool in reducing stress and anxiety. Exercise releases endorphins, a chemical that acts as a natural painkiller which not only improves sleeping habits, but gets rid of stress. Now some of you must be dreading and loathing the notion of exercise and having to get up from your cozy mattress, but I’m not referring to crunches or planks. I’m talking about physical activities, including sports. Yes hiking with friends whilst creating boomerangs on the “gram” is included. 

Now in terms of activities I participated in, one of the most thrilling was zip-lining. For those who are not acquainted with the sport of zip lining, you are stationed on the edge of a platform. Fortunately, there are safety measures; hence your body is connected to a rope that is connected to a steel cable that stretches 500 ft down the slope. Usually the art of zip lining is done over verdant shrubs or in extreme circumstances, violent rapids and hostile gorges. It’s less of a physical activity, but more of a mental one. Every single muscle in your body shall resist the exuberant and foolish orders of your brain. But here me out. Take a deep breath, forget fear is actually a real thing, and close your eyes and then leap. 

In short, zip lining for me was like one of those dreams, or nightmares, where you are perilously falling to your unfortunate end. Yet the chances of death are non-existent, and you can liken the rope and parachute to the opening of eyes and awakening to reality after that terrible dream. You can picture zip-lining as the safest mode of free-falling that includes bungee jumping and abseiling. After that zip-lining ordeal, I started valuing life from a different perspective, heck I kissed the ground when Mr. Lark got me down. 

  • What I enjoyed and didn’t enjoy. My recommendations to you

Now some of you might not be infatuated by the idea of paying to be scared. Things like horror movies or gory serials aren’t your thing. Luckily in these Spanish travel lodges, zip-lining isn’t your only option. You can sample certain activities like hiking, or camping, with the other young adults, under the dense forest of redwoods and Cedars, whilst overlooking the snow capped peaks that effortlessly surpass 8000 ft. The voices and laughter of 200 students bubbled and echoed through the forest like hot broth. 

I highly endorse holding a karaoke competition, even the greatest cameras of Canon can not capture the euphoria and joy we felt whilst we cavorted to cheesy songs and guffawed at our companions terrible vocal skills. We gave the name to our camp “the den of crows”, because like crows, our singing was ear-piercing. 

Other options that I really savoured and enjoyed were swimming and having a dip with my mates in the volcanic springs and teal stained lakes of the Alps. Taking a bath in the volcanic springs is a first-class form of a massage. Even better, it moisturizes the skin and can heal eczema. I remember most of my group spending their final hours working out in the pool, or paddling around like poodle dogs. When we ran out of ideas, or were too tired because of our activities, most of us would play cards. 

If you really think you’re brave, or if you have a big ego, you can combat and battle the turbulent streams and rapids roaming the dense forests in the new sport of canoeing. Canoeing was the most thrilling and nerve-racking activity of them all. I loved and hated it. It’s the perfect way to unveil nature’s bipolar side and test your mental strength and personal limits. It’s a ticket to forgetting those mistakes and rubbish that you wrote in your late GCSE’s or SAT’s, final exams, you get what I mean. 

Now without a doubt, it’s quite dangerous. Don’t worry, there are tight security and safety regulations and the tour guides present, give tips and lectures over how to behave, how to avoid mishaps and accidents. Most importantly, there is an emergency plan in place that is undertaken in case of someone getting severely injured. Our tour guide was Mrs. Boulding, a fitness enthusiast and an eccentric lady who believed canoeing was the champion of sports. She would say, “All men were created equal, but then some became canoers”. Her husband was given the connotation “Elk King”, because he would brag about the time how a group of elks came towards him and ate out of his hands. Or how he shot three elks dead when he was in Canada. 

The adrenaline activity of canoeing at first was fun and exciting, but slowly turned into a drudge for me. Instead of following orders, the other teens and young adults began smacking the raft against the river bed and the wall of cyclonical rocks. Yes, I battled my inner fear of drowning, but it really wasn’t too enjoyable. The wetsuit made me feel like a boiling egg and I got blisters on my legs due to constant exposure to water. I had to spend three grueling days of my one month tenure to Spain because of the reckless attitude of others. (for god’s sake just stick to the basic canoeing manual on www.BossCanoeing.com) I also had to deal with incessant bullying from my friends, so for me canoeing is a no go. 

  • What I learnt

Jokes aside, I really valued the time that I spent away from the college campus. Instead of jotting down points or scribbling my hours away on the copy writing about Psychology, I utilized my time to relax. You could say I meditated my stress away; however I also worked on my fears and conquered them. Fear of heights: gone, fear of wild animals gone! Fear of death: GONE!

As a wise man said “In the end we only regret the chances we don’t take”

So I implore my viewers and fellow peers, get up from the sofa and book your next ticket to your dream destination. Forget about the exams, find a spot within your budget and get a group of friends that can go with you! Also, spending some time in the wild, free from the clutches of electronics, improves focus and strengthens retention power. You respective observers would be pleased to learn that your efficiency in college will likely be higher than before. I went from C’s to straight A’s. On the contrary, exercise will reduce risk of mental diseases like depression and insomnia. I went from C’s to straight A’s. But that’s my job, to get the latest tea and piece of advice to you readers. Take care, see you later.

The title of this text is “Some birds are so stressed by noise pollution seems as if they have PTSD” and it is written by the Washington Post.From the title alone we can see that the author is trying to compare birds to humans as this way humans will be able to grasp the topic better. The purpose of this article is solely to inform the reader about the effects that our noise pollution has on the animals that live among us. Since the publisher is The Washington post, hence the audience targets are huge.This article caters to readers of all ages be it teens, adults or even senior citizens. The theme of this article is noise pollution and how we humans affect animals.

Firstly the author starts right off the back with a personification, “Take a toll”.Through this personification he is trying to tell his audience that because of our actions birds have to pay the price. By using a personification to do so he is also entertaining the audience and presenting his idea in an undisputable manner. Since usually only humans have to take a toll he can make his audience understand his point even better.

Secondly, he uses an alliteration, “normal noises”. By this he means to compare the noise of the surroundings the noise of the gas compressor. He demonstrates the effect that the  compressor has on the birds and how it damages their ability to hear overall.By using an alliteration he maintains color in his article and manages to keep it interesting. He uses this as a hook to keep his audience in place want them reading more.

Thirdly ,he uses another personification as his main goal here is to make his audience feel sympathetic for the birds and put themselves in the bird’s place and judge if what’s happening to them is right. the personification he uses is, “Stress hormone levels became skewed”. Since usually only humans have stress hormone levels that high it would be a perfect comparison and his readers would be able to better understand his stance

Moving on the tone that the author uses it’s clearly dark, sad and not optimistic at all.This can be seen through his use of words such as “if they survived at all”.Here he is very negative and sad about the fact that these birds could very well die. this sad and dark tone appeals to the audience it awakes their conscience and makes them want do something about it to make a change. this perfectly serves the authors purpose In conveying his point of view.

Furthermore, he uses quotations. He quotes scientist and researchers , “Animals are constantly surveying their environment. By the use of quotation his audience is bound to agree with all of his points as they are reinforced by solid facts and they cannot counter them as they are being supported by researchers and scientists.

Also, the author uses triples here and there to keep his article interesting colorful and bright. For example, “Noise pollution, abnormal levels of stress hormones, and lower survival.” Here he is trying to tell his audience that these three things are interlinked and changing one drastically affects the other.Choosing triples to do this is a very smart play from the author as from even a glance over the line one can see these three things and make sense out of them easily.

Finally he also uses a rhetorical question, he does so to engage with this audience , to make them realize and question themselves in their own head.To get them thinking about the authors perspective and eventually agree with him. For example , “Why is hearing so important for health” Initially this may seem as a very simple question but when the audience gets thinking about it they realize that if hearing is important for them it would be important for birds as well”

So in conclusion the author uses multiple techniques to add color and light to his passages but ironically has kept the tone really dark. He makes use of personifications and  alliterations to convey his points in a thoughtful manner. He provides quotations, facts and undisputable arguments. This makes it hard for the audience to disagree and they end up agreeing with the authors perspective overall.

This passage was taken from ‘Some birds are so stressed by noise pollution it looks like they have ptsd.’ which was taken from the Washington Post. This passage serves as informative and also to entertain the reader. The author tries to carry out the passage’s purpose, of carrying information and displaying it to the reader, while also keeping him interested and entertained. The author needs to get his point across of spreading the message of how bad pollution is for the environment but he can only achieve his goal by telling the reader a story. By painting a picture in his mind. This keeps the reader interested. 

The author tries to achieve this purpose by using different styles and a variety of words and sentence structures. The author tries to make his passage stand out by displaying information while also telling a story, keeping it enjoyable for the general audience. The audience consists of mostly adults and young adults. The passage is presented as formal. 

The author uses a flavourful structure in this passage to keep the reader interested. He writes in short to medium sized paragraphs so as to keep the reader involved. He does not dwell into writing long paragraphs as he must feel that the vast majority of the audience would get bored. 

The author doesn’t use many figures of speech, instead he tries to paint a picture in the reader’s mind using his diction. These help to portray the author’s message in the reader’s mind, which also helps to strengthen his message. 

The author writes in a soft tone so as to make his words seem kind and of comfort. This acts as a rope and draws the reader in. 

The author makes use of simple and complex words and no humour so as to not confuse the reader but also to keep it from being too simple. The author also uses a combination of simple, compound, and complex sentences. This keeps the sentences different from one another, and develops a relationship with the reader. 

The author also makes use of facts and statistics to bias the reader towards his point of view such as “240 nesting sites in Northern New Mexico”. This reminds the reader that the author has evidence behind his claims. 

The author also uses many references so as to win over the reader’s mind to his views. He uses many, to name a few: “said Rob Curalnick curator of biodiversity informatics at the Florida museum of natural history,” or, “in a paper published in the National academy of sciences”. 

I believe the writer has succeeded in getting his message across to the reader. He has successfully included the information he needed to while also keeping the reader involved and entertained. He uses a variety of sentence structures, vocabulary, and different styles to get his point across.

Q. ‘Playing sport in school should be compulsory’. Discuss. By Noor Liza Rashid

Imagine a school without sport, just school work the whole day,every week,every month,every year. How boring would that be and how unfit would the students appear? They will be obese, unhealthy and tend to get weary of the school routine and studies would become a drag. Now, what would happen if sport was compulsory at every school?If it was compulsory at every school students would be healthy,active and would have more attentiveness and application towards school. They simply wouldn’t just sit the whole day, but would go out and play sports.

Advocates of the topic believe that there is a vital need of including sport in the school’s curriculum. Miss Chamberlain, a teacher to the secondary level,states, “The children have become lethargic! They need a break from work, from the new topics that they learn every day and they need to go out to the school grounds and play sport”.

Playing sports will not only refresh the students but will also help them stay in a physical and mental condition. An obesity graph for children and adults has been growing in the past few years. Students may not know this but if they’re not fit and healthy when they’re young, they will be in even worse health when they get older.Another teacher says, “they’re active during morning time but as the day progresses they become sluggish,apathetic and classes seem tedious and tiresome to them.” A research carried out at Oxford University showed that students participating in sports will have better academic performance than the ones who were not exposed to physical sports.

In retrospect ,the challengers of the topic maintain that sports aren’t necessary to the school curriculum and are simply a waste of time as most of them have never ever  played them in their whole lives. Brad Smith, a student of grade 9, claims, “We come to school to study not to indulge in playful activities. I have never played a single sport in my life and you expect me to waste a whole hour struggling to run and getting hit in the face? I’d be better off in class studying.”

Students would also learn to work as a team and cooperate with each other when playing sport. By participating in sports, teenagers not only get the much needed exercise but also learn skills for life. For example, most of the sports require the team members to co-ordinate and encourage fellow mates to achieve the common goal of winning the game. Interacting with team members and conveying their opinions and ideas will allow them to think and express freely. These skills will eventually make the person an extrovert and help in developing leadership qualities. Making sport mandatory will in particular benefit those students who have a natural talent for it. Mr Ali, a P.E teacher,says, “Sometimes students approach me and leave me surprised. I’ve seen many students unaware of their natural talents. Perhaps they would’ve never known if they hadn’t taken the first step and asked for my help. These are the students that help schools win championships. I sincerely believe that sports in school should become imperative.” 

On the contrary,opponents of the topic argue that participation in such sports leads to embarrassment, resentment and insecurities. They say “Amateur sports are supposed to be about having fun, but try telling that to a sore loser. Sore losers suck all the joy out of playing. Coping with their fragile egos, bad tempers, and antisocial behavior is a challenge. Even if you beat them fair and square, they will imply that you cheated, or make up some excuse to try and take away any sense of achievement that you may feel. It’s not just a young person thing either, if anything, middle-aged men can be the worst sore losers around.”

By including sport in the curriculum, the talented students and those who lack in academics can be encouraged to build a career out of it. Since children get to try their hands on various kinds of sports at school, they can choose the one they feel good at. There are many instances, where children from financially unstable families found their calling in sports while at school. Some of them have excelled in it and become extremely successful. Alex Heyes, a leading football player, agrees, “perhaps if  the teacher hadn’t been absent that day,I would’ve never found my passion for sports.

Getting an opportunity is the right of every student at a school. They need to be given a chance, they need to be tested to know their capabilities and choose what they enjoy and believe what is right for them.”

Some teachers are the critics of the topic and believe that playing sports makes the students inattentive in class. Mrs Hepburn maintains, “There have been times when sport has ruined their entire day , usually because they’ve lost and can’t help thinking about all the mistakes that they made during the match. The players can suffer crippling nerves or anxiety during class in the period leading up to big matches. Some have trouble going to sleep at night  because their bodies and minds are still buzzing. This leads to them being tardy and lazy at school.”

Proponents of the topic feel that teenagers who play sports have become sharper and much more intelligent. Ames Morgan, another famous psychiatrist claims, “teenagers who play sports use different planning strategies while playing and have to make decisions very quickly. This strategy can also be used by them in real life”. Similarly, another study claims that teenagers who play sports in which team strategies are used, they can work better in teams and can communicate with people better and obtain leadership qualities.

Although some people love playing sports, they argue against gamesmanship. A student claims, “Unfortunately, the art of following a narrow and literal interpretation of the rules, while completely disobeying the spirit of them, typically by employing all sorts of dubious ploys and tactics to gain advantage, is alive and well in amateur sports. For those of us who desire the fun or a fair contest, this is a sad state of affairs. I’ve seen more than enough bad behavior by individual players, captains, and teams over the years and the effects are always negative for sport and its appreciation.” 

In conclusion, I feel that the schools should make sports and physical education mandatory in order to keep their students physically and mentally fit and to create awareness about the necessity of exercise in one’s lives. Heywood Broan once said, “Sports do not build character, they reveal it.”
